Training With a Back Injury: Stacy's Success Story at LIFT

LIFT Performance Gym • August 5, 2026

"I thought it was the end of my fitness journey." That's how Stacy describes life before she walked through the doors of LIFT Performance in Southington, CT. After living with a back injury for more than a decade, she had quietly given up on the gym, on strength training, and on the version of herself she used to be. Then one conversation with her mom changed everything. Her story is one we hear in different forms all the time: an injury, years of avoidance, and the fear of starting over alone. Below, we share Stacy's journey in her own words, along with what it reveals about training safely with a back injury and why the right environment matters more than the perfect program.

1. A Decade of Living Around a Back Injury

For over ten years, Stacy's back injury dictated her daily life. She couldn't sit for long periods and couldn't lift much of anything. Like so many people managing chronic pain, she gradually shrank her world to fit her limitations, avoiding activities, travel, and exercise rather than risking a flare-up.

Her experience with gyms didn't help. Her only prior membership was a big-box gym roughly twenty years earlier, and she didn't stay long. Without coaching, guidance, or anyone to help her train around her injury, walking into a traditional gym felt risky at best and pointless at worst.

2. The Moment That Changed Everything

About a year ago, Stacy's mom shared that she wanted to travel to Italy, and she asked Stacy to join her. Then came the caveat: "I know you can't really handle sitting. I don't know if you can handle the flight."

"At that moment, a switch went off in my head," Stacy says. "I've given up so much of my life for the last ten years. I'm tired of doing it."

She started with her nutrition and began losing weight. Then came the harder step: rebuilding her strength. "I was afraid to do it alone," she says. "So I came here."

3. Finding the Right Gym in Southington, CT

Stacy joined LIFT Performance in February, and her nerves disappeared almost immediately. "I was really nervous to come, but as soon as I walked through the doors I was welcomed by everyone, and it's been like that ever since," she says. "I feel like I'm where I belong for the first time in my life, and it feels amazing."

What made the difference wasn't just friendliness. It was coaching that took her injury seriously. "They're so supportive and attentive. They're there if you need to adjust anything, like with my back. You're pushing yourself, but you're doing it in a safe way."

That's the core of how we train at LIFT. Every member starts with an assessment so our coaches understand your history, your limitations, and your goals before you ever pick up a weight. Exercises are modified for you in real time, whether you're recovering from an injury or training for a Hyrox race.

4. The Support System You Didn't Know You Needed

Stacy describes LIFT as "the support system you didn't know you needed." The community trains together, motivates each other, cheers each other on, and even runs friendly competitions. "I've never met a more supportive group of people," she says. "It's really cool to be a part of it."

For someone who spent a decade avoiding fitness out of fear, that environment is what turned one brave first visit into a lasting habit, and confidence that extends far beyond the gym floor.
